The «Serre-vie» project Secondary school in Cabano Témiscouata (Quebec)

(2015) W.H. Perron is sponsoring the Serre-vie project initiated by the secondary school of Cabano in Témiscouata. Under the supervision of Mr. Eric Forcier, co-responsible for the project. Serre-vie was originally initiated by the students. Serre-vie literally meaning «Greenhouse-Life».

The school has a greenhouse serving for pedagogical and communal purposes, unique in the region, and allow the students to learn the trades of growing vegetables.

<<In Témiscouata, what began as a scientific school project transformed itself into an initiative of social and environmental sharing. Three years ago, students and volunteers got together to build a large greenhouse of 130' x 25' and garden of the same dimensions, on a vacant land adjoining the school.

The students part of the horticultural and environmental program carried out the hard work and produced more than 10 000 pounds of greenhouse vegetables. These vegetables were devoured by the school students as the greenhouse is open 24/24 and 7/7. The participants were proud to be able to nourish the school student, but also, they could give back to the community.

Since the greenhouse is permanently open, we insist on the sharing notion and the message was well understood. The citizens self-regulate their vegetable consumption and deliberately respect the installations. The 50 000 carrots sown last year has been eaten in the same way.

On the same parcel of land, we developed a special space for production of fruits and started an orchard to create a peaceful area for sharing. This year partnered with the community and internal school commissions, we will continue to improve the orchard and the large space for fruits, to get more people interested and have them experience healthy and fresh foods.

As our greenhouse production is carried out in the greenhouse with organic soil fortified with compost, our production techniques can and are transmitted to the population and since about 2 years ago now, we can see pails on balconies and amateur gardeners come see us get information that brings them toward food autonomy.

(2016) W.H. Perron congratulates all the students of the Serre-Vie project in Témiscouata-sur-le-Lac, for the prestigious prize of «Prix du Public» awarded by the David Suzuki Foundation!

A great 2016 season to all and fruitful crops!
